Have you wondered what fish eat below the water’s surface? What bugs your flies are imitating? How to better imitate bugs? Been curious to know more about bug life cycles?
If yes, then this education series is for you!!! You can participant in one or all of the sessions.
Introduction to Aquatic Entomology
Monday June 5th from 6-7:45PM
Whetstone Public Library Meeting Room
3909 N. High Street
Columbus, OH 43214
Don Dean will be leading a session on the basics of aquatic entomology to help introduce members to the macroinvertebrates frequently found in trout river systems (particularly in the Mad River). You can expect to learn about aquatic macroinvertebrate life stages, behaviors, substrate habitat, as well as characteristics for identification. These skills will be directly used in the other two sessions and should translate to a better understanding of the flies used for catching trout.
This session is limited to 15 participants, please email Erica Szeyller (email@example.com) to reserve your spot.
TUMadMen River Monitoring
Saturday June 17th from 9-1pm
(rain date: 6/24 http://www.tumadmen.org/calendar.shtml)
St. Rte. 36 Bridge
Join TU and COFF members to help monitor the Mad River system! River monitoring is an effective hands-on way to learn more about the bugs in the Mad River. You will also learn how different insect species communities can help to determine river quality. If you attend the “Introduction to Aquatic Entomology”, this is a great way to reinforce your learning.
No RSVP necessary for this event, just show up! Plan to wade.
Imitating Aquatic Insect Behavior
Tuesday June 27th 6pm until dark
Location TBD – likely either the Mad River or Clear Fork depending on weather/flows
Jon Horn will be leading an on-the-water session on imitating aquatic insects. At this session, you will explore the behavior of different aquatic insects, see a demonstration of imitating insects with a fly rod, and get to practice the techniques yourself! Plan to spend a good bit of time in the water – that means packing your fishing gear (rod/reel/flies/etc.) and being prepared to wade.
This session is limited to 8 participants, please email Erica Szeyller (firstname.lastname@example.org) to reserve your spot.
Hope to see y’all there!
